Falcon & Winter Soldier's Emily VanCamp Responds To Power Broker Theory

Falcon & Winter Soldier star, Emily VanCamp, responds to the popular fan theory that Sharon Carter is the villain known as "The Power Broker."

Falcon & Winter Soldier star, Emily VanCamp, has responded to a popular theory that her character Sharon Carter is the faceless villain, the Power Broker. The former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent made her MCU debut in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and given the fact that she is the great niece of the famous Peggy Carter, it is difficult to think of Sharon as a potential villain. However, anything is possible in the MCU, even for Sharon.

The anonymous villain was introduced to the series in episode 3 of the series, "The Power Broker" when Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) find Dr. Wilfred Nagel (Olli Haaskivi) on Madripoor. Nagel's work to recreate the Super Soldier Serum was funded entirely by the Power Broker, and he managed to make 20 vials of the serum until they were all stolen by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), the leader of the Flag-Smashers. However, right as fans came the closest to learning the identity of the Power Broker, Zemo pulled out a pistol and silenced Dr. Nagel. The Power Broker has been of limited importance ever since then in the series, as the focus for our heroes has turned back to the unhinged New Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and the Flag-Smashers.

Any actor in the MCU knows that they always need to be prepared to avoid the tough questions, and VanCamp has made it clear that she indeed is ready to deflect anything that could make her accidentally slip up. During an Q&A with Interview Magazine, VanCamp was caught off guard and was asked directly, "So are you the power broker?" to which she responded:

My official answer is that I can’t give you an answer, but I love that you asked that. That’s the first time someone’s straight up asked it. But I can’t answer that. You’ll have to wait until Friday to see what happens.

With one episode remaining in the series, fans anxiously wait to see how—or, if—the identity of the Power Broker is revealed. It is easy to exclude Sharon from being the invisible villain because of her previous heroics in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil Warsuch as sacrificing everything she had to help Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) escape with Bucky. However, a lot has happened since she was declared an enemy of the state and fled to Madripoor, where she remained until her reappearance in Falcon & Winter Soldier. A combination of Carter's physical proximity to Dr. Nagel on Madripoor, the vast amount of technology that she somehow has access to, and her shady new life as a stolen art dealer and makes Sharon seem suspicious.

The Falcon & Winter Soldier has a lot of loose ends to tie up in the season finale. In addition to the Power Broker identity reveal, fans also anxiously wait to see if there will be an epic showdown between Sam and Bucky and the Flag-Smashers in New York City, and how John Walker will return to the narrative. However, as VanCamp says, fans will just have to wait until then to find out.
